Optimal use of keyboard and mouse?
Hi,
I was just wandering what your opinion is of the optimal use of keyboard and mouse for playing GW. I am usually using the 1-8 and tab/c keys, and the mouse for moving and selecting certain foes. But I've read that the arrow keys can help you dodge or something like that.
What about you? Any tip/advice?
Thanks!

if you move around, you can dodge arrows and other projectiles. arrows and projectiles shoot ahead of you in the direction that you were moving when it was fired. so if you change directions in the meantime then it will miss.

Mouse and keyboard? Not I! I have played gw so long now my frontal lobe has expanded to allow ESP functions to move my char. Then again it could just be really bad lag.

i have stopped using my mouse for selecting as it takes focus off the screen, i have moved all my skills to the numpad with 1-2-3 being 4-5-6(nump) 4-5-6 being 7-8-9(nump) and 7 being +(nump, this is usually the skill i will use/need the most as it is accessed quickest from both rows) and skill 8 being -(nump, this is usually res sig so, i dont need fast timing with it)
i do nothing with my left hand other then WASD, CTRL and ALT, and space bar...
for targets, '0' on the num pad brings me to next attack target(i do use tab sometimes with my left hand for selecting specific targets such as boss monsters or monks) with 1 on the num pad being next item... obviously then space bar "does it"...
theres other things but those are the main changes and it has really streamlined combat for me
so my hand sits with this set up:
LEFT:
Thumb = space bar
Pointer = D
Middle = W
Ring = A
Pinky = Shift(habit from other games)
RIGHT:
Thumb = 0 button on the num pad
Pointer = 4 on the num pad
Middle = 5 on the num pad
Ring = 6 on the num pad
this all allows me easy access to all skills on a stack rather then in a long row
Pinky = + on the num pad
This also gives my right hand more to do and since the num pad is right next to my mouse i can switch back and forth fairly easy, durring combat i dont really use the mouse very much but im quick at doing whatever needs done and getting back to the num pad... not in combat i use the mouse as normal

When I decided to finally go restoration with my ritualist, using spells that target players to do damage and healing, I changed my top 1-8 number keys to select party members and my num pad keys to select skills.
Other than that change my layout is still default for everything else.

I never understood why people like WASD... it's aweful. I use arrow keys for movement, mouse for almost everything else.

I havn't heard that one in a while. But for some games WASD is needed due to access to more keys around it. Try playing Counter-Strike with the arrow keys. Makes me shudder.
Once you get used to it though it is much better and easier then the arrow keys could dream of(specially when talking about arm positioning)

Because WASD allows you a free range of movement. Can you strafe with your mouse? Can you quickly start running away with a mouse? (more than likely not since you would have to turn the camera to click away.)
Mouse is only useful for spinning the camera if needed and clicking on party member names...mabye enemies'. The only problem with keyboard movement, and it's something I have found in lots of NCSoft games for some reason, is that if you try running around a cornor you will often times lag for no apparent reason. Though, it is not as bad as in other games, it can be annoying at key moments.

I do play CSS with arrow keys... if you actually move things around you can find a comfortable set up.

I used arrow keys when I was a nub in CS 1.1 or whatever. It was nice for a while till I realized that WASD feels better (they are at an angle from each other) and you have more buttons to press. If you like arrow keys that much try using the numpad "4,5,6,8" as arrows that way you have multiple options around them.

Never needed so strafe in GW.
If u want a perfect example of good keyboard use check Tommy equals FTW from Team Quitters. Always before doing a healing spell he changes his weapon set... That's really freak

Well...seeing how I use a laptop, things are a tad different. Pretty much all of my actions are done using the keyboard and shortcut keys.
My setup is as follows:
Left Hand
Pointer - Q (left strafe). Will use for T, C, R, and D (if needed)
Middle - W (don't really use unless using touchpad for something. Same goes for S)
Ring - E (right strafte), A key (if needed)
Pinky - nothing
Thumb - Space Bar
Right Hand
Pointer - Left Arrow key
Middle - Up Arrow Key
Ring - Right Arrow Key
Pinky - Again...nothing
Thumb - Nothing much
Skills 1-5 are done with left hand. 6-8 are done with right hand. F1-F4 weapon changes are done with left hand. About the only thing I use the touchpad (right hand) for is talking to people, picking up something, or flagging heroes (when flagging I use the WASD keys so I can continue to move around). Any of the other shortcuts aren't particularly important and don't really affect gameplay.
I use this setup and found it very comfortable as well as competitive. Whether doing PvE or PvP, I have not had any problems.

I almost only use my left hand for GW, even though I'm right handed. I activate skills with left hand, strafe, move, the only thing I use my right hand (mouse) is targeting things and whirling the camera around. I have my weapon slots set to "m , . ;" because I wanted F1, F2, F3, and so on to be target my party members. So I mostly use my left hand for playing GW and my right hand does all the extras.

I also use my left hand for everything. I only use right hand when I want to press enter to talk and I also write with both hands. I need the right hand to hold the right mouse button since I hold it always when I move. And I hardly ever use mouse for anything else than looking around.

Never use keyboard for movement. NEVER! The backward movement not only awkward, but it is slow!!! It's a lot better to just click and have your character turn around and run.

My contribution to this thread - is to use a mouse with configurable buttons.
I'm using a logitech gx mouse with the stardard mouse buttons but also 2 extra on the side are set up to "select target" and "next target"
This allows me to move swiftly from foe to foe without my eyes ever leaving the screen.
This is a really nice and speedy plus.
Other than that standard WASD fare - I mix clicking on skill icons and punching the numbers. I think both are pretty viable speed wise.

And you wonder why they make such nice criticals on you?
Quote:
Each weapon attack has an independent chance of dealing a critical hit. A higher weapon attribute increases this chance. Attacker and target levels are also factors. A few skills can cause or negate critical hits, as specified in their description. If you strike an opponent who is fleeing from you, you will always score a critical hit.

strafe and backing up, loosing him on a bodyblock by another is mway better to deal with attackers
